Many people don't realize that one of the best things they can do to maintain the life of their carpet is to vacuum it frequently.
Vacuum low traffic areas at least once weekly.
High traffic areas, especially areas where children and pets spend a lot of time, should be vacuumed at least three times weekly.
Have your carpet cleaned at least once a year, preferably by a carpet cleaning professional.
If you have children and pets, you need to have your carpet cleaned twice a year.
For some finishes, light damp mopping does the trick - see your manufacturer's instructions for more specific guidelines.

Removing the dirt actually helps maintain the appearance of your carpet by preventing "pile crush."
Pile crush occurs when infrequently vacuumed fibers get matted-down by heavy foot traffic.
4. If you live in a two-story house, go ahead and get two vacuum cleaners: one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs.
Don't let to the hassle of carrying your vacuum cleaner up and down a flight of stairs keep you from the proper vacuuming.
